Tracking your link promotion campaign

If you have read the last few chapters, you now know how to locate qualified link prospects and craft a link request letter that maximizes your chances of receiving a link.

All you need now is an efficient system to organize and track your link requests. Having a good system in place ensures that nothing 'slips through the cracks'. It gives you the ability to judge the success of your campaign at a glance and see which approaches work and which don't. It also makes you look like a professional by avoiding duplicate link requests and enabling you to follow up on past requests in a timely manner.

Your tracking system should....

- keep track of the basic contact information for link prospect sites you would like to contact

- record the date of each link request you send out

- allow you to record when a link prospect site had added your link

Here is an example of a simple chart we use to track small link promotion campaigns:

Example of link promotion tracking chart

Link Promotion Campaign for: ___________________________________

Analysis of chart:

Website URL: URL of the web site you are asking for a link.

Site Name: Actual name of web site (may differ from the URL)

E-mail: E-mail address you will use to contact the webmaster. If there is more than one e-mail address listed on the web site (e.g. webmaster, sales, support, etc.), pick the one you feel is most appropriate.

Alexa visits: If you are using the Alexa toolbar, fill in the 'Total Alexa Visits' in this column. This will give you a good estimate of how much traffic each web site gets.

Message Sent: Check off this column when you send a link request message.

Date: Insert the date you sent the link request message.

Link Added: Check off this column when a link prospect adds a link to your web site.

There are a number of different ways you can track your link promotion campaign...

1) By hand - You can create your own handwritten log or just print out our free link promotion tracking template from our "Templates and tools" section.

2) Spreadsheet - For greater accuracy and speed, you can use a spreadsheet to track your campaign. This will allow you to cut and paste from your spreadsheet directly into your outgoing link request messages. For your convenience, we have included a ready-to-use spreadsheet in our "Templates and tools" section.

3) Specialized link promotion software - For faster speed and ease of use, you can use a 3rd party link promotion tool that will let you categorize and track the status of each link request. We recommend and use Arelis Reciprocal Links Solution.

Summary

Congratulations! You should now have a much better understanding of what it takes to run a successful link promotion campaign.

When done properly, link promotion will increase the number of quality links to your web site and dramatically improve traffic to your web site. Unlike other forms of promotion which try to 'trick the search engines', link promotion is an ethical long- term solution that benefits all parties involved. Although it may seem time consuming at first, remember that each new link pointing to your site can provide hundreds of dollars worth of traffic for years to come.

Now that you have finished reviewing this guide, we recommend the following steps to get started...

1. Visit our Link promotion templates and tools page and view the sample link request letters. Copy and paste them to a word processor of your choice and customize them for your site.

2. Print out the link promotion 'tip-sheet' for your quick reference guide to link promotion.

3. Decide if you want to track your campaign manually or use a link promotion package. If you are tracking your campaign manually, download one of our two tracking templates (HTML or Excel) from our 'templates and tools page'.

4. Spend one hour searching for qualified link prospect sites to approach. Be sure to apply the factors listed on the tip-sheet to select the most appropriate sites to contact. Build your list of qualified link prospects.

5. Start contacting the webmasters on your list. Be sure to customize each message as much as you can.

Repeat steps 4 and 5 on a daily or weekly basis. You will be amazed by the results you can achieve by spending a small amount of time promoting your site on a regular basis!
